Lucky tire winner…..

Fellow Mountain West Vintage Trialers…

As many of you know, for the last two years we have raffled off a set of new Dunlop 803 tires. Here’s the skinny on the raffle….

drawing the winning ticket

Mia pulling out the winning ticket.

I wanted to be able to provide awards and/or number plates for our riders, without dipping into the club’s operating account that is used to pay for permits, toilets, etc., so Mike Stokes and Apex Sports, along with the Moto Swap Meet donated both tires. At each trial event during the season, and at other trials events, tickets are sold for $10 each or 3 for $20. At the end of the season, a winner is drawn and the winner gets to take home the tires.

So what is this all about? Why does Chuck bug us with this raffle stuff…sheesh? Well, as some of you know, I make the year end award plates for our riders. What you probably don’t know is that many of us competed with other vintage trials organizations for years and never received anything like a number plate.

And yes, the number plates cost money…so, the money raised by the raffle pays not only for the year end awards, but some advertising as well. This year, MWVTA was able to pay for a booth at the Denver Endurocross, hosted by me – Chuck Moline and Roy Moline, Tom (Wulffy) Maddux, Kristy Rayner and Nick Turner. We had our vintage bikes cleaned up and on display, ran old trials videos all day long – from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm – sold tire raffle tickets, and we had a lot of interest in our club. Luck would have our booth located next to the beer court which helped with visibility. Some of the funds from raffle ticket sales went toward the cost of the booth.

Since I was not able to make the last MWVTA in Roswell, NM – I twisted some arms at the Rocky Mt. Trials Assoc event at Corral Bluffs so I could sell more tickets, and drew the winner at that event too. We sold nearly $300 in tickets at the Corral Bluffs event.

tire raffle winner

One really happy winner!

The winner of the tire raffle just happened to be 8 yrs old and a future Pro rider for sure – Barret Pourpore.

This young trials rider had a smile as big as the sky, as you can see even through his helmet. Those of you who know me, know that I not only support us old guys – but know that those kids are the future of this sport. It was worth all the hard work, arm twisting and new tire smell in my Suburban.

Next year’s raffle may be for a new pair of Garne Trials boots, a helmet or who knows what we’ll come up with.

I want to thank all those who purchased tickets and supported this effort. We are a small club but I see it growing and getting more fun every year…
